Zanzibar President Hussein Mwinyi Meets with UN Delegation and FAFU Representatives on Juncao Project

From August 7 to 8, 2024, a high-level UN delegation and representatives from FAFU’s National Juncao Center visited Zanzibar, Tanzania, to inspect Juncao technology demonstration sites. During the visit, Dr. Hussein Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, met with members of the delegation, including Earle Rattray, Director of the UN Secretary-General’s Office, Liu Junhua, UN Deputy Secretary-General, Fu Cong, China’s Permanent Representative and Ambassador to the UN , and Lin Zhanxi, Chief Scientist at FAFU’s National Juncao Center. Both sides commended the successes of Juncao technology in Zanzibar, highlighting its role in addressing livestock feed shortages and boosting incomes for smallholders. President Mwinyi and the Zanzibar Ministry of Agriculture expressed interest in further adopting Juncao cultivation and salinized soil reclamation technologies from FAFU.

Upon arriving in Zanzibar, the delegation held discussions and in-depth exchanges with officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, Natural Resources, and Livestock. The delegation, accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, also conducted on-site inspections of several demonstration sites for Juncao technology demonstration sites.

Supported by the UN Peace and Development Fund’s Juncao cultivation project and guided by FAFU, Zanzibar has set up initial demonstration sites to showcase Juncao technology for farmers in Africa’s island and coastal regions. This initiative underscores Juncao technology’s significant potential for advancing livestock development, agricultural diversification, and rural sustainability.
