On the morning of December 31, Prof. Jun Zhang from Institute of chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, was invited to make a report entitled Cellulose processing and functionalization based on ionic liquid solvent system in the hall of Qishan Campus. Prof. Lihui Chen, an expert of National high-level talent special support plan, presided over the conference.More than 60 teachers and students in the College of Material Engineering attended the meeting.


Cellulose is the most abundant natural polymer in the nature. Ionic liquid dissolving system can effectively improve the utilization of cellulose and broaden the application of cellulose. Prof. Jun Zhang first introduced the background, application and highly efficient ionic liquid solvent system for the regeneration of cellulose, and then introduced in detail the achievements of his team in recent years on the mechanism of cellulose dissolution in ionic liquids and the functional applications of dissolved cellulose, including high permeability cellulose membranes with high mechanical strength, flame retardant cellulose aerogels and fibers that can be applied to anti-counterfeiting. Finally, the industrialization project of cellulose based transparent adhesive completed by their team in 8 years. Prof. Jun Zhang's team applied their research results in the laboratory into practical production applications, whichgave much inspiration to the teachers and students.



Jun Zhang, is a professor in Institute of Chemistry, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences,and deputy director of Key Laboratory of engineering plastics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Heis the winner of National Science Fund for Outstanding Young Scholars, an expert of National high-level talent special support plan, and the first leading talent project of Taishan industry in Shandong Province. At present, he is deputy director of the Technical Committee, China Cellulose Industry Association (CCIA), deputy director of cellulose professional committee of China Chemical Society, editorial board member of polymer International (Wiley), Polymer Journal, and Scientific Bulletin. The main research interests include processing and functionalization of natural polymers, cellulose chemistry and physics, application of ionic liquids in polymer materials, functional polymer composites, new polymer fibers, etc. He has published more than 200 papers in academic journals, applied for more than 40 Chinese patents, authorized more than 30, authorized one American patent and one Japanese patent, respectively. He is winner of the first prize of 2013 Beijing Science and technology award.
