British Ambassador to China Attends the Signing Ceremony of Letter of Intent between FAFU and University of Chester

In the afternoon of December 21st, British Ambassador Ms. Caroline Wilson CMG, Ms. Jo Hawley (British Consul General in Guangzhou) and Luo Guansheng (Assistant Counselor of Fujian Provincial Foreign Affairs Office and Executive Vice President of Fujian Provincial People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries) attended the signing ceremony of letter of intent between FAFU and University of Chester and unveiled the jointly-built Terahertz Agricultural Phenotyping Laboratory. Zheng Baodong, Vice President of FAFU and officials from Office of International Cooperation and Exchange attended the activities.

Zheng Baodong gave a general introduction of FAFU and then briefed Ms. Caroline Wilson CMG on the school’s cooperative history with British universities and scientific research institutions. Zheng expressed that FAFU wishes to deepen cooperation with more British universities and institutions in terms of global challenges including climate changes and food security. Zheng also proposed that British embassies and consulates in China coordinate with related British universities and departments to take more measures to encourage and facilitate overseas study for Chinese and British students, assist in introducing quality educational resources and strengthen cooperation in running schools, as part of the efforts to promote educational exchanges impeded by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ambassador Ms. Caroline Wilson CMG expressed her excitement for witnessing the signing of letter of intent and the unveiling of Terahertz Agricultural Phenotyping Laboratory after taking office. She expressed that the UK is open to enhance strategic and global cooperation between Chinese universities and scientific research institutions and their British counterparts in different fronts including food security and biodiversity. The UK is willing to support cooperation between British universities and FAFU in various fronts including running schools to enhance people-to-people and educational exchanges.

Before the talks, Zheng Baodong accompanied Ms. Caroline Wilson CMG to watch Chinese tea art performance and visit Fujian Dehua Ceramics Museum. It is noted that FAFU and University of Chester signed the Memorandum of understanding in 2019. The signing of letter of intent aims at expressing the bilateral intention to jointly train postgraduate talents for rural revitalization. Implementation agreement will be signed based on further negotiation after the pandemic.
