In the afternoon of July 20th, International Symposium on China-Pacific Island Countries Poverty Reduction and Development Cooperation was held in Changsheng Conference Center, FAFU. Gu Yu, inspector and counselor of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, Luo Guansheng, member of the Leading Party Members Group of Fujian Provincial Foreign Affairs Office, Huang Shurong, Deputy Director of Fujian Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Lan Siren, President of FAFU, Professor Lin Zhanxi, chief scientist of National Engineering Research Center of JUNCAO Technology and the missions of Pacific Island Countries (PICs) in China attended the symposium. The meeting was chaired by Tang Zhenpeng, Vice President of FAFU.

President Lan delivered a speech. He said that the establishment of China-Pacific Island Countries Poverty Reduction and Development Cooperation Center in FAFU would serve as a bedrock for promoting poverty reduction and development cooperation between FAFU and South Pacific Island Countries.

David Teaabo, Ambassador of Kiribati to China, spoke highly of China’s own contributions to those in need of assistance,which set a good example for other countries. He hoped this Center would improve economic development and individuals’ livelihood in Pacific Island Countries by pooling resources and sharing experiences so as to achieve poverty eradication and mutual benefits.
Wen Tiejun, chief expert on the three rural issues in China and director of the Institute for Rural Revitalization, Frank Wangnapi, director of the Department of Natural Resources of the Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea, and Christopher Gan, director of Yunus Social Business Centre (YSBC) of Lincoln University, chairman of the Master’s and Doctoral Committee of Faculty of Agribusiness and Commerce and Minjiang Scholar Chair Professor of FAFU delivered keynote speeches at the symposium.

Diplomatic corps of PICs to China plant giant JUNCAO together
The 12-person delegation of the Pacific Island Countries, consisting of ambassadors from Solomon Islands, Kiribati, Samoa, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu, as well as the Trade Commissioner and Investment Manager of the Pacific Islands Forum Trade and Investment Commissioner’s Office, visited the National Engineering Research Center of JUNCAO Technology in FAFU before the meeting and planted the “happy grass” of Giant JUNCAO together.

It is reported that the opening ceremony of the “China-Pacific Island Countries Poverty Reduction and Development Cooperation Center” was held in Fuzhou on the morning of the July 20th. At the ceremony, Fujian Provincial Foreign Affairs Office and PNG Eastern Highlands Province signed a memorandum of understanding to establish Silk Road Partnership, and on behalf of FAFU President Lan Siren signed a memorandum of cooperation with PNG University of Technology as well.
