On October 25, Prof Fulufhelo Nemavhola, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Cooperation of Durban University of Technology (DUT) and Co-Dean of its Confucius Institute (CI), visited FAFU. Through this visit, he intended to explore ways of deepening cooperation between FAFU and DUT in accordance with the spirit of President Xi’s reply to the letter from students and faculty of the Confucius Institute at DUT, the policy decisions of the Fujian government, as well as the fruitful results of FAFU Council Chair Mr. Wang Jiannan’s previous visit to DUT. A meeting was held between the visiting vice chancellor and FAFU president Professor Lan Siren in the morning, and later by vice president Professor Zheng Baodong in the afternoon.

FAFU President Professor Lan Siren welcomed Prof Nemavhola on behalf of the university. He hoped that President Xi’s reply letter should serve as an inspiration for the two universities to deepen their already fruitful cooperation. Both sides should work together to implement agreements signed earlier and offer students vocational training in addition to language education. Measures must also be taken to further enhance the Confucius Institute’s curriculum and promote its education quality. The combination of these measures will greatly expand the influence of DUT’s CI and make it an example for other institutes. It is hoped that CI will better contribute to cultural and humanity exchanges between China and South Africa.

Prof Nemavhola thanked FAFU for its hospitality. He said that the Confucius Institute at DUT has performed remarkably well for a decade after its establishment. At the same time, he hoped that it will further facilitate cooperation between the two universities in more fields and achieve more and better results.

Discussion between Prof Nemavhola and Professor Zheng Baodong

During the afternoon meeting, Professor Zheng and Prof Nemavhola respectively introduced the general situation and strengths of the two universities. They next exchanged views on issues including CI winter camps in China, infrastructure and facility improvement of the institute, and research cooperation. In addition, the two sides conducted an in-depth discussion on establishing a joint-doctoral program and reached initial consensus.

Prof Nemavhola also visited the Haixia Institute of Science and Technology and National Engineering Research Center of JunCao Technology.
