FAFU-CHINA” team consisted of 16 students (including Ruicheng Dai of our college and Hao Feng from the College of Bee Science and so on) won gold in the 13th International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition (IGEM) in Boston, USA On November 1, 2016.

FAFU-CHINA team was established in 2015. It has received bronze in the 12th IGEM. Our members made persistent efforts based on the cordial sympathy and encouragement of Huiling Ye, the secretary of the party committee of our school, and the vice secretary of Xiangsheng Zhuang. In addition, FAFU-CHINA team introduced more students from five colleges (including the Agriculture, forestry and biological innovation experimental classes, College of Bee Science, College of Resources and Environment, College of Life Sciences, and College of Crop Science) in the form of open recruitment at the beginning of 2016. Mosquito who can spread viruses is a kind of pest. Surrounding the biological control of mosquitoes, the new team carried out research under the guidance of the teachers ‘team led by the researcher Zujian Wu from the College of Plant Protection. This project mainly focused controlling the mosquito larvae lived in water through gene expression. Specifically, Cry gene and Cyt gene from the bacillus thuringiensis were transferred to the Chlamydomonas reinhardtii which exists widely in the water. Then, the active Cry and Cyt protein were expressed efficiently so that controlling mosquito larvae. Over the past year, the team members kept their enthusiasm for the subject, worked together assiduously and made a great progress. Team members made full use of the original foundation and technology system which belong to the supervisors’ laboratory and carried out their research together. Beyond that, they also had outstanding performance in the academic exchange, science popularization, public welfare activities and helping for the other domestic colleges during the competition. In particular, they could freely describe the item description and answer questions in fluent English at the site of the project presentation and question-and-answer session. Of course, they showed a good comprehensive quality. IGEM tournament judges had much interest on the project, affirmed highly the project ideas and application value. They believed that the project had a novel idea, better solved the hard colonization of bacillus thuringiensis in the water and the loss of activity of insecticidal proteins because of the influence of ultraviolet ray. Moreover, they also think this project provided a new way of thinking for the biological control of mosquito larvae. They gave a full approval to the team members for their comprehensive performance. Ultimately, FAFU-CHINA team won the first gold medal of our university with high honors.

It is reported that the International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition (iGEM) was founded by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2003. It developed into an international academic competition in 2005, was a top International academic Competition in the field of synthetic biology. The related research results of the participating teams were published in Science, Nature, Scientific American, the Economist and so on. At the same time, the results got media attentions and special report such as BBS.

A total of 306 teams from 40 countries were attracted by this competition, including many world's top University teams, such as Harvard, MIT, Cambridge, Oxford, Stanford University and so on. Asia team included the University of Tokyo in Japan, the University of Hong Kong, the National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan,Peking University,Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and so on.
