Training Program toward Statistics Postgraduate of CCIS

     In 1940, the “statistics” first-class master discipline was founded by bio-statistics of Forest Department, the Provincial College of Agriculture. The discipline mainly focused on interdisciplinary integration, which was characteristic in 5 aspects including ecology and resource statistics, mathematical statistics, bio-statistics, statistics and evaluation of assets and economic statistics. The research achievements won national leading position and made valuable contribution to the theory innovation of statistics discipline and the Hercynian economic and social development. The discipline leader was Prof. Wu Chengzhen, who was known as “national level candidate of New Age millions of talents project”. The discipline maintained a team of 19 professors, 17 associated professors, 25 teachers with doctorates, one national outstanding contributive young expert and seven experts enjoying special allowance of the State Council. In addition, the discipline was awarded by provincial science and technology one first prize, ten two prize and 26 three prize and by provincial social sciences outstanding achievement five first prize, eight second prize and 11 third prize. Among the publishing of over 400 papers, 32 papers were embodied by SCI and EI. Provincial innovation platform, which had “Fujian Province College Key Laboratory of Ecology and Resources Statistics” and “Southern Forest Resources and Environment Engineering Technology Center”, had carried out cooperation in scientific research, academic and talents exchanges with Bullock of Canada University and Taiwan Chiayi University. The recruitment of nearly five years consisted of 36 postgraduates, among which seven were graduated. The cultivation of graduate students were equipped with comprehensive quality and bright employment prospects.

1.Training Target

     Cultivate morally, intellectually and physically developed high- level talents that engage in statistics teaching and scientific research and management to serve the construction of socialist modernization. The specific requirements as below

     (1)Adhere to the party's basic line, patriotic, disciplined, has the good scientific research ethics and professional spirit. Be moral, honest and trustworthy, physical and mental health, able to adapt to the need of modern high-level statistical work.

     (2)Adapt to the needs of scientific and technological progress and social development, master the solid basic theory and systematic specialized knowledge, have strong ability of self-study and broad knowledge, strong innovation ability, practice ability and entrepreneurial spirit, have the ability of engaging in scientific research and technical work independently.

     (3)Master a foreign language, be skilled in reading, writing and translation, have the basic skill of listening, speaking, able to adapt to need of professional study, research and academic exchanges of this major.

3. Period of Schooling

     Generally, the length of school for full-time graduate student is three years. Failed to finish the learning task for objective reasons, students may apply for extension of the period of schooling. The longest learning period of graduate student who full-time study for a master's degree is less than 3.5 years and the longest learning period of graduate student who service study for a master's degree is less than 4 years.

4. Training Methods

     Training course can take a variety of forms such as classes, self-study, discussion, report, and social practice. Written test is the main part of the examination, and the oral examination, practical operation, etc, could be the supplementary part according to the characteristic of the course.

     With the development of science and technology and economic construction in our country, in order to adapt to the needs of different departments, postgraduate training of statistics subject requires postgraduate student to participate in scientific research and teaching activities and take part in social practice. Their dissertations require considerable theoretical depth or a certain practical significance that has high practical value.

Master's degree thesis should aim at the forefront of research statistics subject which has great theoretical significance and a good prospect, can do some contribution and promote the development in the crossing and infiltrating of subject. Teachers of statistics and relevant disciplines share the responsibility of mentor of this type of master graduate student.

5.Curriculum and Credits

    (1)Total credits: Credit system is adopted in curriculum which can be divided into degree course, compulsory course and optional course. Total credits are required to be no less than 36, among which 18 need to be got from degree course, 8 from compulsory course and no less than 10 from optional course. Specific courses are as per List of Curriculum and Credits.

    (2) Make-up courses: postgraduates with equivalent education or admitted through interdisciplinary professional examination need to make up no less than 6 credits (equal to 3 to 4 courses ) main courses in this subject of undergraduateprogram, which are Statistics, Sampling Technique, National Accounts and Resource Investigation and Statistics.

6.Practical Education

     (1)AcademicActivities:In order to cultivate postgraduates’ innovation ability and independent thinking ability, improve their academic level and communication ability, and live up academic atmosphere, they are required to achieve 3 credits by attending academicactivities during their study. After passing the test, they would attain 1 credit for each special report given by themselves, 0.5 credit for attending a national academic conference and 0.1 for each general academic report or lecture.

     (2)Teachingpractice: In order to develop the teaching ability of postgraduate students, in the second and third academic year, students are arranged to taking part in undergraduate teaching project and learning pedagogy under the guidance of instructor. The project can be conducted in form of guiding experiments or rehearsing certain chapters. The practice is advised to be within 100-100 hours ( including time of preparation and no less than 8 hours for teaching). If passing the test, students can attain 2 credits.

7.Mid-term Assessment

     Detail requirements are as per Mid-term Thesis Assessment for Postgraduates of Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University.

8.Scientific Research and Dissertation

     (1)Dissertation is to check postgraduate students’ quality of learning, and develop their working styleof integrating theory with practice and ability of scientific research. Students are required to be engaged in scientific research and dissertation work under their instructors’guidance with no less than one year. And dissertation needs to be completed by students their own.

     (2)Postgraduate students need to combine their dissertation with R&D mission and choose those subjects with theoretical and practical significance to SocialistModernization or disciplinarydevelopment. Paper plan is to be put forward at the end of the second semester which concludes the arrangement and conducting way of the thesis proposal, main content different stages of paper writing, certain requirements and deadlines, etc. The research must adhere to the principle of experiment or design and the content of essay is required to be base on the materials collected through students' own experiment, observation and investigation. Instructors should strengthen the whole guidance during proposal,writing process and defense. Generally, thesis proposal is in the third semester and experts would give their opinions in the tittle of students’ article. Detail requirements are as per Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University Interim Provisions About Graduate Dissertation Proposalof Postgraduates and the dissertation work is to be implemented according to Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University Interim Provisions AboutThesis Oral Defense of Postgraduates.

     Postgraduates are encouraged to strive to publish at least one academic paper in national core journals before the application of thesis oral defense.
