The Chinese quintessence Peking Opera was sung around the South Africa

“I was deeply moved by the stories which transcended any language or cultural barriers. Stunning art form, awe-inspiring performers and majestic music, I will never forget this experience as long as I live.” The journalist of South Africa Nosipho Mngoma acclaimed after she had watched the Peking Opera performance in Durban on June 18th.

On June 18th -19th, as one of the serial celebration activities of the “2015 South Africa’s Chinese Year”, the tour performance of Peking Opera “Beautiful Tianjin” and the exhibition of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China” were held in the Durban Playhouse Theatre. This activity was jointly hosted by the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China, Ministry of Art and Culture of the Republic of South Africa, Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Republic of South Africa, and the Consulate General of the people's Republic of China in Durban, undertaken by Tianjin municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Film and Television,and co-hosted by the Confucius Institute of FAFU at DUT. The artists of the Tianjin Peking Opera troupe and the group of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Tianjin had given two wonderful performances and cultural presentations for more than 1000 spectators of Durban. As a co-organizer, the Confucius Institute of FAFU at DUT invited hundreds of teachers and students of DUT and South Africa's social celebrities who gathered together to share the art feast. This developed the function of Confucius Institute and played an important role of cultural bridge.



The Chinese quintessence Peking Opera opened in a burst of opening drums. The musicians were dressed in costumes of Tang Dynasty and attracted immediately all the spectators on the spot. This performance gathered the classic pieces of Peking Opera with male, female, painted and clowns roles. The singing, speaking, acting, acrobatic fighting in Peking Opera as well as the virtuosity of the artists brought to the spectators the wonderful feelings about the art of Chinese traditional Opera and won the applause of the spectators again and again. When the performance was ended, all the spectators stood up and gave a persistent thunderous applause to express their affirmation and adoration to the performance. The activity had attracted all the local medias of South Africa to come for interviews on the spot. The headlines of the front page of the mainstream media of South Africa Daily News published a special report titled “From China with Love”.

It is known that, as one of serial celebration activities of the “2015 South Africa’s Chinese Year”, this activity has achieved a great success by presenting the extensive and profound Chinese culture to the South Africans. The Confucius Institute of FAFU at DUT would continue to carry out other serial cultural activities to celebrate the “2015 South Africa’s Chinese Year” in order to make greater contributions for promoting the mutual understanding and friendship between the people of China and South Africa.
