The Confucius Institute’s First Chinese Teaching Course Ended Smoothly

The Pilot Mandarin Course for DUT Staff Members jointly built by FAFU and DUT acomplished smoothly on April 29th after the intensify preparation and teaching nearly two months.

The experimental course commence on March 19th, and was offered with a duration of five weeks, twice or 4 hours each week, with a total of 20 hours. It was the first Mandarin class set up by the Confucius Institute of DUT after its formal operation since mid-February. Though the preparative time of the course was short, it quickly attracted great interests from the foreign universities’ faculties and staffs. There were more than 10 students, including Dr Lolie Makhubu, the director of language and translation department of DUT and other faculties, staffs and foreign teachers of DUT.

The teaching content of this experimental class included Chinese language culture and basic oral Chinese; The Course aimed to help students master Chinese pinyin, pronunciation and intonation, to practice the simple writing of Chinese characters and the preliminary daily oral conversations, to preliminarily understand the trajectory and characteristics of Chinese language and characters, and to cultivate the students' interest in Chinese language and culture. Through learning, students had mostly mastered basic Chinese pinyin system, could use about 80 Chinese characters and 10 basic points of Chinese grammar for basic dialogue. They could also learn an average of five cultural knowledge points such as Chinese tea culture, the origin of Chinese characters, Chinese Gung Fu, ancient architecture and so on.

After the accoplishment of the course, Confucius Institute awarded every students with a Certificate of Attendance signed by the principle.

As an experiment course, this Mandarin class has achieved a good effect, It improved the knowledge and acceptance about Chinese language and culture of teachers and students of DUT, expanded the influence of the Durban Confucius Institute, and also laid the foundation for the next step of language teaching of Confucius Institute.

It is reported that the Confucius Institute has already started Polit Mandarin Courses destinating to DUT students on April 22nd in order to meet the need of DUT students of studying Chinese language and culture. There were 12 students who participated in the course and is currently undergoing smoothly. In addition, the Confucius Institute also plans to open the Short Chinese Course this month primarily destinating to teachers and students of DUT and providing them with all levels of Chinese language training. The Basic Chinese Continuous Professional Education Course destinating to the citizens of Durban are now in active preparation, the work of propaganda for recruiting students has been actively carried out in cooperation with the relevant departments of DUT; In addition, the project of Mandarin Fun/Interest Course destinating to local high school students of Durban is also actively prepared by consulting or arranging with different partners.

At present, the Confucius Institute of FAFU is trying, in accordance with the relevant regulations of DUT, to promote the Chinese teaching with multi-levels, varied-objects and diversification, and to make the Chinese teaching integrating into the foreign university’s Credit Courses or General Education Courses as soon as possible.
