A Confucius Institute Jointly Launched by FAFU and DUT

On the morning of March 26 (local time), under the witness of President Xi Jinping and South African President Jacob Zuma, FAFU signed an agreement towards the establishment of Confucius Institute with Durban University of Technology (DUT) in Union Building in Pretoria. The agreement was signed by Madam Xu Lin, Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters, and Professor Ahmed Bawa, President of DUT and Chairman of the Higher Education Association in South Africa.

The Unveiling ceremony of Confucius Institute

On the morning of March 27 (local time), at Ritson Campus of DUT, a signing and unveiling ceremony was held on FAFU and DUT’s cooperation in the construction of Confucius Institute at DUT. School Party Secretary Ye Huiling and President of DUT, Prof. Ahmed Bawa signed the agreement. Director Xu Lin and President Ahmed Bawa held the unveiling ceremony. Present at the ceremony were guests from local political circles, cultural circles, business community, and the press, teacher and student representatives of DUT, Vice President WANG Zonghua, and other members of the delegation from FAFU, witnessing the establishment of Confucius Institute.

During the ceremony, Eric Apelgren, mayor's representative of Durban, and Prof. Ahmed Bawa made speeches, expressing their warm congratulations on the establishment of Confucius Institute, and hoping that Confucius Institute will become a new bright spot for the cooperation in education and cultural exchange between China and South Africa. Xu Lin also expressed her congratulations and thanks, and she hoped that with the joint efforts from both sides, Confucius Institute would have its specialty in providing high-quality Mandarin service for local students and community and making contribution to language and cultural exchange between China and South Africa.

School Party Secretary Ye Huiling made a speech at the ceremony. On behave of more than 60,000 students and staff of FAFU, she expressed her thanks to the recognition and support from Hanban, and said FAFU would create favorable conditions for the establishment of Confucius Institute with DUT. She pointed out that as a platform, Confucius Institute would promote the comprehensive and in-depth cooperation between the two universities in teaching, research, student exchange, and social services, and make a greater contribution to the promotion of friendship between China and South Africa.


Confucius Institute of DUT is the first establishment of Confucius Institute witnessed by President Xi Jinping during his first diplomatic visit, the first Institute in KwaZulu-Natal, and the fourth Institute established by Hanban in collaboration with South African universities. Currently, Xiamen University, Huaqiao University, Fujian Normal University and Minjiang University have established 20 overseas Confucius Institutes and 43 Confucius Classrooms. According to the agreement, FAFU will send specialized personnel to South Africa to carry out the enrollment, teaching and other work. FAFU will coordinate closely with DUT and make joint effort to build a unique Confucius Institute. Meanwhile, FAFU will seize this opportunity to implement the early memorandum of cooperation signed by the two universities to further expand exchanges and in-depth cooperation, on the basis of great achievement of Juncao technology in KwaZulu-Natal.

On March 27, CCTV Focus reported the joint establishment of Confucius Institute by FAFU and DUT. Teachers and students of DUT are looking forward to it, and believe it will strengthen ties in education exchange and trade between China and South Africa. The establishment of Confucius Institute at DUT is a milestone in the process of FAFU’s internationalization of education; it expands the school’s impact at home and abroad, and sets the school's image, which will greatly enhance the confidence and determination of FAFU in opening education.
