Master programme in Bioinformatics

This program is designed for students who would like to gain knowledge and experience in Bioinformatics. Graduated students should be able to independently be responsible for research, development or investigation work within the broad field of bioinformatics. As bioinformatics professionals with computing and bioscience skills, the graduates may pursue a career in industry, government or academia, or pursue further study towards a PhD degree. The graduated student should have the skill and ability to:

 use bioinformatic knowledge and practical methods in information searches, data collection, data organization and analyses to independently solve bioinformatic problems.

 formulate and solve bioinformatic problems using models, algorithms and computer programs.

 plan and carry out bioinformatic projects.

1. Fields of Study and Research

 Genomic Informatics

 Molecular Evolution and Phylogenetics

 Computational Biology

2. Program duration

The study period of full-time master graduates in this discipline is three years. Excellent studying masters can have a shorten study period appropriately. Masters who cannot complete study on schedule due to impersonal cause can apply for prolongating the study period. The study period of off-job and on-job master graduates is no more than three and a half years and four years respectively.

3. Training Patterns

The training programme is carried out by supervisor team, which members can be from cross-discipline. Guidance groups consist of 2 to 3 professors or associate professors invited directly by the supervisors. Masters can do experiments and research work at outside departments, and can be assistant cultivated by experts in outside departments invited temporary by the supervisor. Supervisors are responsible for drawing up and regulating masters’ studying programmes, organizing the opening reports and guiding scientific research and thesis, and so on.

In order to master the solid basic theory and systemic specialized knowledge and skills in this discipline, masters should have compulsory courses well and take some elective courses according to their basis and the needs in research area. The courses learning can be lectures, workshops, or others. Whatever the courses are, masters should pass the examinations. Only those with qualified achievements can get credits.

4. Requirements

To satisfy the requirements for the Master of Science degree, you must complete 30 credits, in which credit of required courses should be 18 and elective courses no less than 12. The master candidates should get all the credits of the courses in this programme before mid-term examination. To required course and elective courses, it is qualified at score over 70 and 60, respectively. Masters from different discipline or with equal education level should take some supplementary courses determined by supervisors according to the specific circumstance of masters.

5. Practice

 Academic Activities

In order to improve the academic activities and communication skills, master candidates should get 3 credits in attending academic lectures during study period. Those giving a special presentation will earn 1 credit, attending academic seminar and other lectures will earn 0.1 credit, attending a national conference will earn 0.5 credit.

 Teaching Practice

In order to develop teaching abilities, at the second and third semesters, master candidates should learn some teaching skill under guidance of supervisors, and take part in teaching activities for the graduate or undergraduate students by guiding the experiments or taking a teaching lesson. The total hours of teaching practice is 100 to 120, including preparing time for every master candidate. After qualified assessments, the candidate will get 2 credits.

Academic activities and teaching practice are required steps. The credits can be achieved only after qualified examination and verification and are not included into total study credits. Those who have not attended the practice education will not be permitted to undertake the thesis defense.

6. Mid-term assessment

Detailed demands are showed in “Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University graduate thesis mid-term examination methods”.

7. Scientific research and thesis

(1) Thesis for master degree is an important aspect for this programme. Master candidate should engage in research work, and work on his thesis for master degree under guidance of supervisor for more than one year. The thesis should be completed by master candidates themselves.

(2) The thesis should be advance, have important theoretical significance and application value. At the second semester, master candidates should put forward the schedule of research work on his thesis, including the opening report, methods, content, demands and critical stage. The supervisor should organize an opening report seminar and the thesis defense process for the master candidates.

The thesis should be revised by the supervisor, and its writing and printing should be in accordance with the requirement of “Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University detailed rules for implementation of degree awarding”.
