Background

A Doctoral Training Program in Biochemistry& Molecular Biology was established at Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University under the direction of a university-wide committee to train highly qualified persons for academic careers in genetics. Our program was revised extensively in the 2012 acquiring a new focus, that of providing a firm foundation in biochemistry, and molecular biology along with rigorous training in research methodology. The program provides Ph.D. program for those who want to carry out Biochemistry& Molecular Biology studies.

Program duration

Although there are individual differences, most students complete their course requirements and research projects with a three year period. The required annual committee meetings help the student bring their thesis projects to successful and timely completion. Students who cannot complete his study on schedule due to impersonal cause can apply for prolongating the study period. Generally, full-time and part-time students should have no more than four years and five years period respectively. Students who are selected and funded by excellent doctoral foundation can extend their study periods appropriately.

Research and training

  • Supervisor responsibility system

Doctoral guidance group mainly leaded by supervisor is constructed, which concludes 3 to 4 persons. Supervisor and guidance group are responsible for drawing up training project and guiding the dissertation totally. Innovative scientific research and technology development will be carried out mainly by graduates themselves.

  • Course learning and research papers combination

Doctors can master solid professional basic theory, basic knowledge and skills by course learning and can be able to engage in scientific research and competent professional work through research papers.

  • Required Courses

Below are listed the courses required of all students in the program. These include degree courses and non-degree courses. Total credit students should get no less than 17, including 8 in degree courses and 6 required course. To satisfy the requirements for Ph.D. degree, the student must complete 17 credits, in which credit of required courses should be 14 and elective courses no less than 3.

Opening report

Midterm examination

  • Supplementary courses

Expect for excellent masters who study for a doctor degree in advance, students without master degree should take all degree courses corresponding to the enrolled master major. Those with different major master degree should take the degree courses corresponding to the enrolled master major with credit from 6 to 8. The supplementary courses are not included in the total credits.

Practical education

  • Academic activities (5 credits)

Academic activities include doing and listening academic reports. Academic reports will keep students abreast of the latest research developments in genetics. There are several seminar series held in the university. Students can attend those seminars pertinent to genetics and their research interests throughout the course of the program. Students are required to make no less than two seminar presentation during their study period. Credits of attending academic activities should be 5, in which giving a special report is 1 credit per time, and attending national academic conference is 0.5 credit per time. After academic activities, students should write an abstract about the activities no less than 250-500 letters and fill in an academic activities enrollment which is effective only after signed by supervisor. Credits can be achieved only after qualified examination and verification. If one has not reached the requirement, he will be regarded as unfinished and will not be permitted to undertake thesis defense.

  • Teaching practice (2 credits)

During the second year each student should serve as a teaching assistant in one of a number of graduate courses or undergraduate courses. This experience is an important component of the training experience. Students should learn some teaching skill under guidance of supervisors, and take part in teaching activities for the graduate or undergraduate students by guiding the experiments or taking a teaching lesson. The total hours of teaching practice is 100 to 120, including preparing time for every master candidate. After qualified assessments, the candidate will get 2 credits.

Academic activities and teaching practice are required steps. The credits can be achieved only after qualified examination and verification and are not included into total study credits. Those who have not attended the practice education will not be permitted to undertake the thesis defense.

Comprehensive qualifying exam and mid-term examination

After all courses completed, in purpose of checking if the students master the basic theory and in-depth specialized knowledge of the discipline, comprehensive qualifying examinations should be carried out, which are important judgment to determine if students can enter into the stage of thesis. Generally, the examination will be arranged at the third semester which is chaired by examination committee consisted of 3 to 5 professor and associated professor majored in this or related discipline. Mid-term examination is carried out based on comprehensive examination. Detailed demands are showed in “Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University graduate student mid-term examination methods”.

Scientific research and dissertation

Doing scientific research and writing degree dissertation are important steps in doctoral training. During study period, doctoral graduates should mainly focus on scientific research and writing dissertations with no less than two years.

Supervisors should organize students to take part in high level scientific research work actively, and attend academic activities and international academic conference in this or related discipline. The scientific research and dissertation of doctoral students should be in the field of basic research or applied research, or research in high and new technology. Research topic should emphasize its scientificalness and applicability, relate to economic construction and social development closely, and combine to national scientific research projects as far as possible. Doctoral students can enhance their abilities during research practice, engage in scientific research work independently and earn the abilities of organizing scientific activities.

  • Opening report

Under the guidance of supervisor, students should understand their research direction, collect data, determine the research subject, carry out research work, and write review. The topic of dissertation should be advance, have important theoretical significance and application value.   • Mid-term report

When entering the intermediate stage of research, students must put forward the reports about the progress of the work achievements, reflect the existing problems, listen to the comments and suggestions of supervisor and guidance group, and improve the research work, so as to ensure that research project can complete on schedule.

  • Finalizing of dissertation

Doctoral degree dissertation must show that doctoral students have firm and broad basic theory, systematic and in-depth expertise and related discipline knowledge, have the ability to do scientific research independently, and make creative achievements in the scientific or technical work. After finishing the research experiment, data sorting, chart production and theory analysis, students should write out thesis draft. Formal dissertation should be formed after checked and revised by supervisor, and should be printed in book.

  • Thesis defense

Requirements of published papers of doctoral students before thesis defense application are necessary. After defense, work of doctoral degree awarding should be carried out according to “Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University detailed rules for implementation of degree awarding”.
