The Confucius Institute of FAFU at DUT held the “Traditional Chinese Moon Festival Gala — Sino-South Africa Cultural Carnival”

On October 2nd, 2017, Local time, the “Traditional Chinese Moon Festival Gala — Sino-South Africa Cultural Carnival” was held at the SibayaiZulu Theater of Durban. This activity was jointly hosted by the Consulate General of P.R.China in Durban, Durban University of Technology, Confucius Institute, and Chinese Community and Police Co-operation Centre of KwaZulu-Natal Province in South Africa.

As one of the serial activities of Confucius Institute Day, the magnificent gala was divided into two sections. The first section was the exhibitions of achievements of the Confucius Institute of FAFU at DUT and traditional Chinese paintings in the activity area of SibayaiZulu Theater. The second section was the Traditional Chinese Moon Festival Gala held at the main theater in the night of October 2nd. Nearly 800 people participated in this activity, including the consul general of Chinese Consulate General in Durban Mr. Wang Jianzhou and his wife, the staff of Consulate General, deputy mayor of Durban Fawzia Peer, International Relation Supervisor of Durban Eric Apelgren, headmaster of DUT Thandwa Mthembu, South African police chief BalaNaidoo, consul general of American Consulate General in Durban Sherry Sykes, director of Chinese Community and Police Co-operation Centre of KwaZulu-Natal Province in South Africa Chen Keyi, overseas Chinese group in KwaZulu-Natal Province, persons of political, business, cultural, education and press circles in Durban, and overseas Chinese.

At 7:30 p.m., Fawzia Peer, deputy mayor of Durban, Wang Jianzhou, consul general of Chinese Consulate General in Durban, Professor Thandwa Mthembu, headmaster of DUT, and Chen Keyi, director of Chinese Community and Police Co-operation Centre of KwaZulu-Natal Province in South Africa, made speeches. The first performance of the party was a poem recitation titled ‘Nostalgia’, performed by the students of DUT; then, a violin duet performance titled ‘Homesick Song’; followed by a song titled ‘Elixir of Love Might’, sung by a man and a woman. The  costumes show, full of Chinese traditional characteristics, performed by the students of Confucius Institute and local Chinese children, brought the gala to a climax.

The Traditional Chinese Moon Festival Gala has been successfully held in Durban for 4 times. These activities have not only conformed the overseas Chinese compatriots who lived abroad with deep homesickness of their motherland country, but also contributed to the spreading of traditional Chinese culture and impression of China, and enhanced the understanding of traditional Chinese festivals by the local residents.
