Sino-European SHUI Project Kick-off Conference and Seminar Held in Fuzhou

A kick-off conference and seminar on “Sino-European SHUI Project” (a project aiming to manage water scarcity in European and Chinese cropping systems) was held in Fuzhou from April 1st to April 5th. The project, initially undertaken by FAFU, is one of The National Key Research and Development Programs of China.

More than 9 European universities and organizations, including SWC-CSIC, Lancaster University, George-August-University of Göttingen, ČESKÉ VYSOKÉ UČENÍ TECHNICKÉ V PRAZE, Universidad de Córdoba, Universität für Bodenkultur Wien, Catholic University of Louvain, Agricultural Research Organization of Israel and Mediterranean Development Foundation, participated in this project. Members of the project also include Hong Kong Baptist University, China Agricultural University, Beijing Forestry University, Beijing Normal University, Northwest A&F University, Nanjing Agricultural University, Changjiang River Scientific Research Institute and so on.

At the opening ceremony, Professor Zheng Baodong delivered a speech to express congratulations to the start of the project and pointed out that the relatively low-efficient utility of farmland water resources is an impediment for increasing crop yield, which is an urgent livelihood issue for both China and Europe. He also expressed his wish that China and Europe could further cooperate on the project for greater breakthrough in the field.

Project tracking specialist from Ministry of Science and Technology, representatives of FAFU Office of Scientific Research and Development, College of Life Sciences, College of Resource and Environmental Science as well as College of Crop Science also attended the meeting. At the meeting, a discussion on crop modeling was made and afterwards the European participants visited The Soil and Water Conservative Park in the campus.
