The research team of Prof. Ming Ruiguang firstly decoded the sugarcane (Saccharum spontaneum) genome in the world

In the afternoon of October 8, the press conference on sugarcane genome research by Professor Ming Ruiguang's team was held at Changsheng Conference Center. The team has firstly decoded the sugarcane (wild progenitor) genome in the world and their research paper was published in Nature Genetics, an internationally authoritative academic journal. This paper reported the complete sugarcane genome for the first time in the world. It is the second staple crop genome that was completely decoded mainly by Chinese researchers, as well as the first autopolyploid genome assembled at the chromosome level. This achievement marked a significant breakthrough in the global crop fundamental biology, and rendered China a leading country in sugarcane research. This research was completed jointly by FAFU and research institutes of the United States and Brazil.
