Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations, Ministry of Agriculture of Fiji and FAFU jointly hold the symposium on the development of JunCao technology in pacific island countries

On June 4th - 5th, the symposium on the development of JunCao technology in pacific island countries was held in Nadi, Fiji. It was jointly hosted by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations (UN DESA), Ministry of Agriculture of Fiji and FAFU. The symposium aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture for developing island countries in the Pacific and achieving the sustainable development goal. This was the symposium since the beginning of the JUNCAO Technology Project, one of the key projects supported by the China-UN Peace Development Fund.

Sai Nawati (responsible official of the UN DESA) made a speech  

Mr. Qian Bo (Chinese Ambassador to Fiji) and Ms. Vuniwaqa (Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation and Acting Minister for Agriculture) attended the meeting and delivered each a speeche. Mr. David Kolitagane (Permanent Secretary for Agriculture), Sai Nawati (responsible official of the UN DESA) and Lin Zhanxi (Chief Scientist of China National Engineering Research Center of JUNCAO Technology of FAFU) also delivered their speeches respectively on behalf of the organizers. In addition, Chinese experts including academician Hou Li-An from Chinese Academy of Engineering, agricultural technicians from developing Pacific island countries, such as Papua New Guinea, Nauru, Micronesia and Tuvalu, as well as more than 70 Fijian officials from Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education and National Biosafety Authority, attended the symposium.

During the meeting, the experts exchanged their views on how to tackle the climate change, water pollution, and promote sustainable development by applying JunCao Technology in Fiji and other Pacific island countries as well as on the ways to popularize the Juncao technology in these regions.
The representatives of different countiers discussed actively about how to introduce and apply JunCao technology and achieve sustainable development. They believed that the technology can serve 11 sustainable development targets in island countries, such as poverty alleviation, food security, gender equality, economic growth, etc.

During the symposium, the representatives visited the China-Fiji JUNCAO Technology Cooperation Project’s site and pasture Yangala, and investigated the production of edible and medicinal mushrooms from JunCao and JunCao feeds.

The symposium was published by Fiji Times on June 5th and Fiji The Sun by full page on June 6th. The website of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China and of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Republic of Fiji published the report of the symposium as well as the full text of Ambassador Qian Bo’s speech at the opening ceremony.
